Modem

A device that connects a network to the internet.

What is a Modem?

A modem is a device that connects your home or business to the internet by converting signals from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) into data your devices can use. The word “modem” stands for modulator-demodulator.

What Does a Modem Do?

The modem receives data from your ISP through a coaxial, phone, or fiber line and converts it into a digital signal. It also sends data back to the internet when you upload or request content. It acts as the essential bridge between your provider’s network and your personal devices.

Modem vs Router

Feature Modem Router
Role Connects to ISP’s internet service Distributes internet to devices
Signal Type Converts analog to digital (and back) Routes data between local devices
Required For Internet access Device connectivity
Common Setup One modem per ISP account Can be standalone or part of mesh

Types of Modems

  • Cable Modems: Use coaxial cable and are common with cable internet providers
  • DSL Modems: Connect via telephone lines (mostly phased out)
  • Fiber ONTs (Optical Network Terminals): Function like modems for fiber-optic services
  • Modem-Router Combos: Combine both functions in a single device, often provided by ISPs

Do You Need a Modem?

Yes — unless you’re using a modem-router combo or live in a building where internet is handled through a centralized system. You’ll need a modem compatible with your ISP’s technology (cable, DSL, or fiber) to get online.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Yes, and doing so can save you money over time. Just make sure the modem is compatible with your provider and internet plan.

A gateway is an all-in-one device that combines a modem and router. A standalone modem requires a separate router for Wi-Fi.

Fiber connections use an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) instead of a traditional modem, but it serves a similar purpose.

Not typically. You need either a modem, ONT, or a gateway device to connect to your ISP.

Frequent reboots may indicate overheating, outdated firmware, or issues with your ISP connection. Try updating the device or contacting your provider.
