Wi-Fi 7
The newest Wi-Fi standard, built for multi-gig internet and homes full of devices. What Is Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7, technically 802.11be, is the newest generation of Wi-Fi. Devices began getting certified in 2024. It’s designed to carry multi-gig speeds over the air with lower latency than earlier standards, so a fast fiber plan isn’t held back by the wireless connection.
What’s New in Wi-Fi 7
- Wider channels. Up to 320 MHz in the 6 GHz band, double what Wi-Fi 6E allows, so more data moves at once.
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO). Devices can connect over more than one band at the same time, which adds speed and keeps the connection steady when one band gets crowded.
- 4K-QAM. Packs about 20 percent more data into each transmission than Wi-Fi 6.
- Lower latency. Better for gaming, video calls and VR.
Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6
| Feature | Wi-Fi 6 | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 802.11ax | 802.11ax | 802.11be |
| Bands | 2.4 and 5 GHz | 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz | 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz |
| Widest channel | 160 MHz | 160 MHz | 320 MHz |
| Multi-Link Operation | No | No | Yes |
| Theoretical top speed | 9.6 Gbps | 9.6 Gbps | About 46 Gbps |
Real-world speeds are far lower than these maximums, but the gap between generations holds.
Do You Need Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7 is worth a look if you have or plan to get a multi-gig internet plan, your home has lots of devices streaming and gaming at once, or you’re buying a new router anyway. If your Wi-Fi 6 router covers your home and keeps up with your plan, there’s no rush.
To get the full benefit, your phones and laptops need to support Wi-Fi 7 too. Older devices connect fine, just at their own top speed. For dead zones, a mesh network matters more than the Wi-Fi generation.
FAQs
Is Wi-Fi 7 faster than Wi-Fi 6?
Yes. It supports much higher top speeds and lower latency, though you need a Wi-Fi 7 router and Wi-Fi 7 devices to see the full difference.
Do I need new devices for Wi-Fi 7?
To use its new features, yes. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 devices still connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router, just at their own maximum speed.
Is Wi-Fi 7 backward compatible?
Yes. A Wi-Fi 7 router works with older phones, laptops and smart home devices.
Does Wi-Fi 7 improve range?
Not much on its own. Coverage depends mostly on router placement and your home's layout. A mesh system is the better fix for dead zones.
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it for gaming?
It can lower latency, especially with Multi-Link Operation, but a wired Ethernet connection is still the most reliable choice for competitive gaming.
