Ping
How long it takes data to travel to a server and back, measured in milliseconds. What Is Ping?
Ping is a measure of response time. It tells you how many milliseconds (ms) it takes for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back. The lower the number, the faster your connection reacts.
The name comes from sonar: send out a signal and wait for the echo. Ping is also the name of the network tool that runs the test, so the word can mean both the test and the result.
What Does Ping Mean in Gaming?
In online games, ping is the delay between your action and the game server registering it. High ping is why you get hit after ducking behind a wall, or why other players seem to teleport. Most games show your ping on screen, and many matchmaking systems group players by it.
What Is a Good Ping?
| Ping | Rating | What you’ll notice |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 ms | Excellent | Instant response, ideal for competitive gaming |
| 20 to 50 ms | Good | Smooth gaming and video calls |
| 50 to 100 ms | Fair | Fine for most things, slight lag in fast games |
| 100 to 150 ms | Poor | Noticeable delay in games and on calls |
| Over 150 ms | Bad | Lag, rubber-banding and choppy calls |
Ping vs Latency
Latency is the delay itself. Ping is the test that measures it. When a speed test reports your ping, it’s reporting the round-trip latency to the test server.
What Affects Your Ping
- Distance to the server. Data can’t travel faster than light, so a server across the country adds delay.
- Connection type. Fiber typically has the lowest ping. Traditional satellite internet often runs over 500 ms.
- Wi-Fi. A wireless connection adds delay, and more when the signal is weak.
- Network congestion. Other people and devices sharing your connection at the same time.
How to Lower Your Ping
- Plug in with an Ethernet cable.
- Pick game servers in your region.
- Pause big downloads and streams on other devices while you play.
- Restart your router, and move closer to it if you have to use Wi-Fi.
- Consider fiber, which has the lowest and most consistent ping of any home internet type.

FAQs
Why is my ping higher at night?
Evenings are peak hours, so more people are online and networks get congested. Connections where neighbors share capacity, like cable, tend to feel it most.
Does ping affect download speed?
No. They measure different things. Download speed is how much data you can pull at once, and ping is how quickly the connection responds. You can have a fast plan with high ping.
What causes high ping in online games?
Common causes include long server distances, poor Wi-Fi signal, overloaded networks, or background downloads running simultaneously.
Is a wired connection better for ping?
Yes. Ethernet provides a more direct, stable route to your router, which typically results in lower ping than Wi-Fi.
Can using a VPN improve ping?
Sometimes — if your ISP is routing traffic inefficiently. But VPNs can also increase ping if their servers are far away or slow.
