ONT (Optical Network Terminal)
The device that turns a fiber signal into an internet connection for your home. What Is an ONT?
ONT stands for optical network terminal. It’s the small box your fiber provider installs where the fiber line enters your home or business. Fiber carries data as pulses of light, and the ONT converts that light into an electrical signal your router can use. Without an ONT, a fiber connection can’t reach your devices.
Where Is the ONT?
It’s usually mounted on a wall near where the fiber line comes in, often in a garage, basement, utility room or closet. Some are installed outside. Status lights on the front show whether it has power and a fiber signal.
ONT vs Modem vs Router
| Device | Used with | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ONT | Fiber | Converts the light signal on a fiber line into an electrical signal |
| Modem | Cable or DSL | Converts the signal on coaxial or phone lines into data |
| Router | Any connection | Shares the connection with your devices over Wi-Fi and Ethernet |
On fiber, the ONT does the job a modem does on cable, so you don’t need a separate modem. Your router plugs into the ONT with an Ethernet cable. Some providers use a single unit that combines both.
ONT Lights and Troubleshooting
- Check that the ONT has power and its fiber signal light is on.
- If a light is red or off, unplug the ONT’s power for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
- Don’t unplug, bend or pinch the fiber cable. It’s fragile.
- If the lights stay red, contact your provider. It’s usually a signal issue only they can fix.
Does the ONT Affect Speed?
The ONT is built to support the speed of your plan, and newer ONTs support multi-gig speeds. If your Wi-Fi feels slow, the router and where it sits are usually the bottleneck, not the ONT. With ALLO Fiber, the ONT is installed as part of your service.
FAQs
What does ONT stand for?
Optical network terminal. Some providers call it an ONU, or optical network unit.
Is an ONT the same as a modem?
It does a similar job for fiber. A modem converts cable or phone line signals, and an ONT converts fiber's light signal. With fiber, you don't need a modem.
Can I use my own router with an ONT?
Usually, yes. Most ONTs connect to any router with an Ethernet cable. Check with your provider first, since some bundle the router and the ONT.
Can I move my ONT?
Not on your own. The ONT is connected to the fiber line, which is fragile. Your provider can relocate it if needed.
Does the ONT need power?
Yes. It plugs into a standard outlet. Some come with a battery backup to keep phone service running during a power outage.
